Factoring Monomials

Factoring Monomials Lesson & Worksheet

A monomial has only one term. For example; 6 is a monomial. Following are some more examples of monomials:

2
6x,
2xy and
12x³yz

Please note that all the natural numbers are monomials.

How to factor a given monomial?

To factor a monomial we need to know how to find the prime factorization of the coefficient. Then we need to write the exponent in the expanded form. Following examples are explaining how to factor a monomial:
  1. 6 = 2 . 3
  2. 6x = 2 . 3 . x
  3. 9y = 3 . 3 . y
  4. - 12xyz = - 2 . 2 . 3 . x . y . z
  5. 12x³yz  = 2 . 2 . 3 . x . x . x. y . z

Note: Please use a dot (.) to show multiplication of factors as multiplication sign (x) will confuse you with variable notation of letter "x"

To factor a monomial find the prime factors of the coefficient and write the exponent in the expanded form.
